The binaries will be installed in /usr/local/bin, a location which requires superuser access rights. An alternative option consists in installing in the user home, for example in a subdirectory called bin. The CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX variable specifies where the bin directory should be installed.

cmake . -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$HOME

In addition, if the Bio++ libraries are in a non standard location (such as ~/.local), use the following option:

cmake . -DCMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=$HOME/.local -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=$HOME

 • Build the library: make
 • Then install it: make install
 • You can also generate the pdf documentation by typing make pdf
